While other fashion houses worry themselves so much about unique styles or should we say odd designs that common people can’t really wear, one fashion designer is more concerned at how he would be able to protect his clients from gunshot. Miguel Caballero, Bolgota’s bulletproof tailor mixes protection with fashion so that VIPs, soldiers and body guards will not be the only ones to be able to wear his creations.

Among his clients are important public figures of Latin America such as Peru Pres. Alan Garcia, Columbian Pres. Alvaro Uribe, Venezuelan Pres. Hugo Chavez and Brazilian Pres. Lula. They also have European clients like Spanish Crown Prince Felipe and wife Letizia. And of course, he tailors for famous actors like Steven Seagal. Just how does Caballero ensure his products meet the needs and fashion taste of these personalities?

bulletproofchic

Bulletproof vests, suits and jackets are designed depending on the kind of protection a person needs. Much heavy and reliable items, for instance, are definitely the only products for soldiers and guards. For those who need fashionable and also comfortable products, 100% flexible and less heavy bulletproof apparels but with the same protection, are designed. “I shoot all of my employees,” said Caballero. “And I have received two times the test”, Caballero adds referring to his philosophy of quality control.

I wonder if there are doctors who have worn under their lab coats any of these bulletproof clothes. Well, maybe controversial doctors such as Dr. Kali P. Chaudhuri and Anthony Galea, if they received death threats like abortion obstetrician Shim Sang-duk of South Korea and Dr Suzanne Gudakunst who revealed top secret fat loss secret to the general public. It would be real annoying and uncomfortable to wear such a thing while trying to save lives.

The long strife in fighting cancer is one big door that opens the mind of cancer patients as to the real value of life. Family and friends of victims testify to every pain that the cancer patient endured, and also speak of the pain that they themselves have to deal knowing they can do nothing to help their beloved. We can just imagine how cancer survivors are thankful for what they consider as their “second life.”

Thanks to the advancements in medicine. Now, cancer stricken people have a considerably good hope to win over the deadly disease. But more thanks to Henrietta Lacks for the ever living contribution in the development of medicine that fights cancer, as well as to developments of Polio vaccine and medicine against flu and Parkinson’s disease. In fact, she was also the key that opened gene mapping and cloning.

Henrietta Lacks’ priceless contribution is her living tumor cell which is called Hela. Although, in truth, she didn’t voluntarily gave the sample of her tumor cells for researches. In 1951, Lacks sought medical aid from John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for her cervical cancer, but still died. However, before she died the doctors took some of her cancer cells to use for research without permission.

The tumor cells were discovered to be no ordinary cells; they kept on growing. And that living tumor cell provided a seemingly endless supply for researches. In fact, they were also used to test the effects of atomic radiation. Hela can still be a key to many other valuable developments in fighting not only cancer but also other dreadful diseases.

Contrary to what most designers today always keep in mind, there are uniforms that existed without thorough consideration of the most important factors of uniforms – comfort, affordability, fashion and taste. They unfortunately end up the weirdest, ugliest, most uncomfortable and most expensive uniforms.

We got in Pulse Uniform stay updated page a collection of the weirdest, the ugliest, the most uncomfortable, and the most expensive uniforms, and I’m about to share to you my personal choices.

For the weirdest uniforms my vote is casted in favor the traditional bluecoat uniform of schoolboys at Christ’s Hospital School in Sussex. If you have your son enrolled in this school, would you believe your eyes when you see him wearing ankle-length coat, neckbands, knee breeches, and yellow stockings? In all honesty, schoolboys in the U.S. will surely go in the streets to protest the administrators of their school.

The ugliest uniforms goes to Vancouver Canucks in their 1980s uniform. The game looked like there came several clones of Voltes V to play hockey. But Pittsburg Pirates just won’t let them win. So there they showed up to in the baseball field with exceptionally unique uniform. Look! The team members lost their lunchboxes and simply put the hotcakes on their heads. To complete the yummy look, there goes the ice cream – the golden yellow pants.

Ugliest_uniforms

For the most uncomfortable uniforms, nothing beats the Russian Policewomen, who, besides wearing band-aid size skirts will have to chase law infringers while in their stilettos. They make big steps during parade, so who knows they might do well in chasing scenes.

And as to the most expensive uniforms, the marine officer uniforms hold a real good grip. A set of inner clothes, pair of boots, and Navy Federal uniforms for over $700. That’s besides the sword and patent leather accouterments which are necessary when you are the officer of the day.

Today is undoubtedly the age of nursing scrubs. This is in spite of the generally sexy clothing trend amongst men, women and the third sex. In fact, some of the offices have showed some skin in their choice of working uniform. A little lower neckline could attract possible customers and or investors. Kids are also seen to wear tube and backless tops over the usual shirts. How, though, would nurses and physicians respond when given the chance to decide on their own without worrying of dress codes? Sexy nurses dress vs. comfy nursing scrubs. Who will prefer what?

Here are a few of fashionable nursing scrub styles and nursing dress for comparison. Tell us what you think.

When the 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, the people in lab coats and nursing scrubs knew right then and there that their help will be utmost needed by the victims. And as organizations start to call for medical volunteers, many doctors and nurses answered and flew to Port-au-Prince, Haiti to share their expertise to the people who are most in need of medical attention at the moment. This move was one big success.

We are in great awe to learn of the amazing response to the call of medical aid as CNN reports of the brimming volunteer doctors in the area. The situation actually leaves some to stand by for work due to the overwhelming number of workers. In the soonest possible time, we all hope these volunteers to be organized and then dispatched to communities where lesser workers are present.

While doctors have flooded Haiti, nurses are in short supply. Hence, interested nurses are asked to enlist and have themselves ready for Haiti. Physical therapists are also needed. Contact organizations that mobilize medical aid to the area. Interested nurses can contact The International Medical Corps., Global Volunteer Network, National Nurses United, Partners in Health, The Red Cross, The Anir Experience, and a handful others.

Other groups that organize Haiti volunteers for other humanitarian aid, except medical, include the following Visions in Action, Ministries of Aides International, Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI), Habitat for Humanity, The American Refugee Committee International, The Christian Reformed World Relief Committee, and World Hope International.

On July last year, I wrote “Best Selling Medical Uniforms Are Pomegranates,” comparing their nutritional values and price against cantaloupes. And now, I can’t believe my eyes. These humble fruit, which I first read about in the bible, might even be able to radically change the landscape of the medical world.

pomegranates

In the past few months, the issue on mammogram has been in intense debate. The American Cancer Society and the U.S. Services Task Force oppose each other as to whether or not physicians should suggest to their women patients regular mammography screening. Others were concerned mainly on the risks authorities are taking upon saying women at the age of 40 must not be required to undergo regular check up.

The Task Force have somewhat got support from pomegranates when news regarding possibilities of its enzymes to help ease breast cancer risk spread in the internet. “Enzyme-blocking chemicals in pomegranates may reduce the risk of estrogen-fueled breast cancers.” –US Researchers (Cancer Prevention Research Journal)–

Aromatase is the enzyme which is said to convert androgen to estrogen, which in turn actively up the development of breast cancer. Shiuan Chen, one of the researchers, said pomegranates have chemicals having properties to suppress aromatase. There are 10 natural compounds that may potentially prevent estrogen-related breast cancer. These antioxidants or phytochemicals may prevent estrogen from feeding tumors.

Very promising. But further research is necessary to confirm the findings, so experts do not suggest pomegranate diet as replacement to aromatase inhibitors. In the meantime, we can hope for positive results.

A Recipe for Your Heart

If you’re health-conscious, this is just one recipe you shouldn’t miss. Thanks to health.com!

Parmesan Potato Pancakes

parm-potato-pancake-hl-1046859-l-400x400

Ingredients:

2 cups leftover mashed potatoes
2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives or green onions
1 large egg white
¼ cup seasoned breadcrumbs, divided
2 tablespoons grated fresh Parmesan cheese
2 teaspoons olive oil, divided

How to Prepare:

  1. Combine potatoes, chives, egg white, and 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs in a large bowl.
  2. Combine 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs and cheese on a small plate. Divide the potato mixture into 8 equal (1/4-cup) portions; dredge in breadcrumb mixture, shaping each portion into a 1/4-inch-thick patty.
  3. Heat 1 teaspoon oil in large nonstick skillet. Add 4 patties; cook 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden. Repeat with 1 teaspoon oil and remaining 4 patties. Serve pancakes hot with applesauce and low-fat sour cream.

This is best for people who have heart problems and also those who want to ensure that they live a life with healthy heart. With only 4 milligrams of cholesterol, this potato pancake packs a punch of flavor. Yes, healthy food need not be tasteless. And since we’re using olive oil, you are assured you are going to eat something healthy.  Olive oil is the second most healthy oil, just next to coconut oil, because it’s rich in monounsaturated fat. This is the healthier way to fry or sauté food.

And guess what? You only need 10 minutes to prepare it, and 12 to 16 to cook.

This was the most attention catching print ad about smoking that I’ve ever read. I first saw this advertisement with my dad’s eyes glued on it. He was then a heavy smoker, puffing more than two packs a day. I don’t know if this was the reason why he stopped smoking. But after less than a year, he quit the habit. He started on October 30, 1998. And since then, I never saw him smoke ever again.

“Yes, it was very hard. But I was determined to win over cigarette because I have children to raise, and can’t afford dying young,” he said. Now, at age 53, my dad still craves to smoke, especially when he smells its addicting aroma. But it doesn’t win him over. To show our support for him on this matter, my mom, my siblings and me, always bring along candies with us. We automatically give him one when someone is smoking nearby.

quit_smoking

You may be one of the smokers who has long been wanting to break the habit but failed several attempts. Why not consider trying again; and this time, ask the support of your family and friends. You must act as the patient and nurse in medical scrubs all at the same time.  Constantly reading substantial information regarding the risks on your health and those around you will also help a lot. Also read about second-hand smoking.

According to WHO, tobacco use kills more than five million people every year – more than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined. If current trends continue, tobacco use could kill more than eight million people per year by 2030, and up to one billion people in total in the 21st century. You could be included in the list, next year or tomorrow.
