February is American Heart Month

February is American Heart Month.

Heart disease is said to be the leading cause of death in the United States. It leaves no on untouched as anyone in the family can be victims. According to the President, “This month, we remember the steps each of us can take to reduce the risk of heart disease and recommit to better heart health for all Americans.”

Most of us have a very hectic lifestyle and because of that our choices are usually more for convenience. Our supposedly balanced diet consists of takeouts and fast food, bad habits like smoking and alcohol, professional competitiveness and high-levels of stress, and for some sedentary lifestyle simply because of technology. We have made it so easy for us to do things that are not helpful to our hearts. In fact, in so many ways we are increasing our risks of having a heart disease.

It is important to learn more about what we can do to take care of our health and our heart. Here is an infographic that shows us some  facts about heart disease. You might be surprised at what you read, like the fact that the stats show that more heart attacks occur on Mondays and in the mornings. The American Heart Association shows us how we can take care of the heart in 7 simple ways.

And if you want to know the warning signs of a heart attack. The month is almost over but it does not mean that we can forego lessons we learn for this month. This is just the start of our campaign to increasing our heart health.

Another ongoing campaign, which is actually a part of this campaign, is the Go Red for Women. Facts have shown that more women die of heart disease than all cancers combined. And the heart attack signs in women may be different from men and we can learn more here. One way to be a part of the Go Red for Women campaign is to wear red dress, or in the case of nurses and other healthcare professionals that would be,  red scrubs.
