World Diabetes Day Turns Blue

World Diabetes Day is particularly celebrated in order to promote better awareness regarding this particular medical condition, while supporting the patients suffering from it. Every year, on the 14th of November, the campaign, lead by the International Diabetes Federation and its 212 member associations, is being supported by millions of people in more than 160 countries and territories worldwide.

It was in 1991 when the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization started the World Diabetes Day. In 2007 it became an official United Nations Day following the passage of United Nation Resolution 61/225. From then on, diabetes advocacy and awareness became extensive.

The slogan for this year is “Understand Diabetes and Take Control” in connection with the 2009-2013 theme which is “Diabetes Education and Prevention.” With 285 million living with diabetes and 344 million others at risk of type 2 diabetes, awareness on every aspect of this disease must be widely taught. People must know diabetes risks and its warning signs. People must know how to respond to diabetes and who to turn to. And, people must know how to manage diabetes and take control of it.

In connection with the upcoming World Diabetes Day, videos, documentaries and other campaign materials are already set up. Every year, the World Diabetes Organizations come up with something to involve as many people as possible. This year, they came up with lighting up the globe in blue. Supporters have been confirming to bathe in blue, and that include the Empire State Building, London Eye, Christ the Redeemer, Burj al Arab, and Obelisque of Paris. It is expected that the media and local communities will also join, and be blue on Saturday.

Everyone is invited spread blue this coming World Diabetes Day. Healthcare workers may choose to wear blue Cherokee scrubs on this day. Pantone colour 279 is the hue. Other shades can be used, though.
