H1N1 Flu Virus Now Infects Cat
H1N1 on pets. You read it right. H1N1 also known as swine flu has already been able to infect animals, a cat in particular. The U.S. Department of Agriculture and Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine confirmed that a 13-year-old cat whose owners had experienced flu-like symptoms contracted H1N1.
“This may be the first instance where we have documentation that transmission occurred involving cats or dogs,” CDS Spokesman Tom Skinner told the Associated Press.
The cat suffered from symptoms similar to what people experience with H1N1 flu. It suffered from lethargy, difficulty breathing and loss of appetite. What does this tell us? The fact is that, although influenza is known to cross species, we’ve seen that there was less with this particular strain. And influenza cases were confirmed on birds and ferrets. In fact, many veterinarians have been telling clients that transmission from humans to cats and dogs or vice versa is beyond unlikely. This time though, this cat proved that wrong.
At this point, it’s not only the people in scrub tops and scrub pants who will have to be busy caring for the medical condition of people, but also dedicated veterinarians. And like physicians, they too, suggest that pets are protected from the dreaded flu virus. To protect your pets, experts suggest taking the same precautions you would to prevent spreading the flu to other people, including getting the vaccine, wearing a mask, keeping some distance and washing your hands.
the H1N1 or Swine Flu virus did put our country in disarray for quite sometime, it is good to know that at least it did not cause so many deaths.
